The Challenge

The project required the construction and commissioning of a new substation within an operational mining environment.

Works needed to be carried out alongside an existing energised substation, creating the challenge of maintaining safety while ensuring uninterrupted power supply to critical mining operations.

The Solution

PBE Rutherford delivered a fully integrated turnkey solution, managing the project from detailed design through to installation and commissioning.
The team successfully constructed and commissioned the new substation in parallel with the existing infrastructure, carefully coordinating works to maintain operational continuity and minimise disruption.

By completing the works safely alongside live infrastructure, PBE Rutherford ensured minimal interruption to site activities while enhancing the long-term reliability of the power supply.

Rix’s Creek Mine in Numbers

Annual Export Volume: The mine exports approximately 1.25 million tonnes of coal annually.

Overburden Removal: Annually, about 10 million bank cubic meters (Mbcm) of overburden material are moved.

Rehabilitation Efforts: In the year 2020, 8.9 hectares of land were rehabilitated as part of the mine’s environmental management initiatives.

Rix’s Creek North: As of 2019, the site employed 118 full-time Bloomfield site-based personnel.

Rix’s Creek South: The workforce comprised 255 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, including site-based staff and allocated corporate and engineering personnel.
